Hi, I’m August.

High School Teacher, Tutor, and Test Prep Coach

My first love is the ocean. My second, teaching.

I first discovered that I could combine my passions to impact the future of our planet when I became an Outdoor School Student Counselor for Carroll County Public Schools in Maryland at the age of fourteen. My experience taught me the importance of cultivating a love for the environment through education and revealed my natural ability to connect with students.

I decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science thinking I wanted to become a researcher. I spent many days during my undergraduate years on a boat or wading in plough mud assisting with incredible research. Yet, I quickly realized that I found the greatest satisfaction tutoring my peers. There’s something special about seeing the lightbulb go off, witnessing a reaction to learning something new, and helping a student find their reason to learn.

Throughout school, I was one of those “when will I ever use this” kids. It wasn’t until I got further into my academic career that I connected the dots. The thing is, it wasn’t anything I did or didn’t do. The person teaching made the difference.

The burden falls on educators to engage and connect with students, and to guide them to see the purpose.

I believe we are at a crucial make-or-break point for educators. It’s more important than ever to connect effectively with students.

The slow response to today's problems shows that many adults are severely disconnected. But it’s not inherently their fault. They just didn’t have the right educator.

Our students today will grow up to be leaders in businesses, politics, communities, and research in a rapidly changing world. We can help shape that world through education.

This is my mission: teaching the next generation how connected we are to the health of the planet, our communities, and society at large and motivating learning through discovery.
